What it simulates

  • Natural colour negative LUT
  • Shoulder curve (0.82 / 0.4)
  • Fine chroma grain (0.08)
  • Neutral WB
  • No vignette, no blur, no halation, no glow — deliberate
  • Scene-based variations: Portrait, Travel, Street, Indoor, Food

How it behaves at capture

  • Photo mode
  • Live in the viewfinder, baked at capture
  • Variations are scenes, not looks — they shift tone/WB for the target subject

What STILL 02 is

STILL 02 is natural colour negative film. The specific character is restraint — no vintage-glow, no halation, no film-blur, no vignette. Just a LUT, a shoulder curve, and 0.08 of fine chroma grain. It's the film you use when you want negative-film response without the film aesthetic being the point of the photo.

Why the discipline

Because half the reason "film looks" fail is that they announce themselves. Every stage in STILL 02 is tuned to disappear — you notice the picture, not the treatment. When the photograph is strong enough that it doesn't need help, STILL 02 gets out of its way.

How to shoot with STILL 02

  • Point at content-forward subjects — food, travel, portraits, street. STILL 02 lets the subject carry the frame.
  • Use scene variations to tune WB for the lighting — Indoor for tungsten, Portrait for skin, Street for mid-key mixed light.
  • Not the right pick for dramatic looks (use MORNING 01 or VERDE 50) or moody night scenes (use NOCT-800).

See also MORNING 01 (warm negative, portrait-forward) and HIBI-200 (daylight negative).

Frequently asked questions

Why is STILL 02 so subtle?

Because natural colour negative film is subtle. Real negative stocks like PRO 400H or Portra 400 are chosen when the photographer wants a film character without dramatic tonal moves — restrained saturation, faithful skin tones, neutral WB. STILL 02 reflects that. If you want a louder film look, use MORNING 01 or VERDE 50.

What do the scene variations do?

They shift tone and WB for the target subject — Portrait weights toward skin tones, Travel toward mixed daylight, Street toward mid-key contrast, Indoor toward tungsten balance, Food toward warm midtones. Same shader stages, different curve/WB combos.

Is STILL 02 free?
