What NOCT-800 is

NOCT-800 is a night camera that refuses to make the night look like day. Every stage in its pipeline is tuned to preserve the specific character of a real high-speed tungsten negative shot after dark: cool shadows, warm midtones, halation blooms around light sources, and a specific kind of chromatic drift where the colours in the frame respond to how bright they are.

The AUTO-MODE refusal

Most smartphone camera apps ship a scene-adaptive stage that renormalises exposure, WB, and tone based on what the sensor sees. Point it at a night scene and it tries to fix the night — lifting shadows, correcting for tungsten cast, smoothing halation. That's fine for record-keeping and terrible for atmospheric photography.

NOCT-800's shader zeroes out the AUTO-MODE stage entirely. The camera cannot renormalise. It sees a night scene and it renders a night scene. That's the whole point.

Luminance-dependent colour

The noctGrade stage grades based on luminance, not on colour. Dark pixels cool toward navy (via (1-lum)²). Bright pixels desaturate (via lum²). Midtones drift amber. The frame gets tone that separates into the specific "night" reading — cool ambient shadow, warm sodium / tungsten midtone, hot-pink halation around light sources.

How to shoot with NOCT-800

  • Point at real night — sodium street lamps, konbini interiors, tungsten restaurants, rain-slick roads at 2am.
  • Halation is at its strongest around single hot light sources. Include one in the frame.
  • Scene variations tune the character: Street for open-air night; Restaurant for tungsten interiors; Konbini for cool fluorescent + tungsten mix; Rain for reflective surfaces; Daylight if you want the tungsten cast on a bright scene.
  • Not the right pick for daylight portraiture (use MORNING 01) or neutral colour (use STILL 02).

Why does NOCT-800 refuse to normalise night?

Because a night camera that normalises night defeats itself. Real high-speed tungsten film shot at night looks like night — dark shadows, cool cast, halation blooms around light sources. Modern smartphone auto-modes fight all of that, brightening shadows, correcting for tungsten cast, smoothing halation. NOCT-800 deliberately disables the AUTO-MODE shader stage so it can't do any of that. The night stays night.

What is luminance-dependent colour?

A grading stage where the colour treatment varies based on how bright a pixel is. NOCT-800 applies (1-lum)² shadow cooling — the darker a pixel, the more it shifts toward navy blue. And lum² highlight desaturation — the brighter a pixel, the more it drifts toward white. The result is night-scene tone: cool shadows, hot desaturated highlights, midtones carrying the tungsten cast.

Is NOCT-800 related to CineStill 800T?

Adjacent, not identical. Real CineStill 800T is a tungsten-balanced motion-picture negative stock famous for red halation around light sources. NOCT-800 targets the same aesthetic — the tungsten-cool WB, the red halation, the high-speed grain — but is a modelled character, not an emulation of a specific stock.
